Hi, my name is Ellie and I am the assistant midway reporter. I would like to take a few minutes to tell you about myself and my experience at the Bloomsburg Fair. I am from Duluth, Minnesota the land of 10,000 lakes. Some of my favorite hobbies are editing video tapes for Public Access Community Television, running my home based business where I make silk flower arrangements, taking care of my guide dog which I prefer having rather than a white cane because it gives me more independance, and most of all, I love to go to carnivals and fairs. I have worked in the ticket box at the Mighty Thomas Carnival and the Mighty Bluegrass Shows so being in amungst the midway is like a second home for me. I had read and heard about the fair through Harriet's Midway Page for 3 years so I had to come check it out. I have always been interested in the Reithoffer Shows and I love riding the rides! It was a dream come true for me to take a trip to Pennsylvania to see the Bloomsburg Fair.
The fair was so much bigger, better, and nicer than I ever thought it would be. There was a friendly atmosphere in the air and wherever I went people were so kind and honest. I was honored to meet Fred Trump and be interviewed on Television. People like talking to me and learning about my dog. They are amazed in the training she went through to become a guide dog and that she can take me to certain rides on the midway if I ask her to. After being shown around the fair a few times and learning where certain places are, I know that if I need to get somewhere from A to B, all I have to do is pick up the handle on my dog's harness and tell her to find a certain place and I'm there before you know it! Even though I don't have vision, I don't let my disability get in the way and stop me from going to the fair and having a good time. I feel really safe being at such a big place with my guide dog because she is trained to alert me to any possible dangers I may encounter.
It was interesting trying out new foods here at the fair. They don't make blue birch and deep fried oreo cookies in Minnesota. That was a real treat! I also really like the entertainment here at the fair. My favorite performances I went to see were Sadie Green Sales and Animals of Destinction. Some of my favorite memories of being at the fair were walking down the midway when it downpoured and almost taking a nosedive in the mud while running to the parking lot. Another was going on the rides on the handstamp days.
I really enjoy coming to the fair and I will be coming back every year because I like it so much.
